Obsession is breaking records in India, but does it really deserve the hype?

At a time when nearly 14 films are scrambling for breathing space at the Indian box office, including Main Vaapas Aaunga, Bharat Bhaagya Viddhaata, Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past, Heer Sara, Disclosure Day, Governor, Backrooms, last week’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Bandar, and Masters of the Universe, one Hollywood release, Obsession, has stolen the thunder.

The movie, directed by Curry Barker, has become fans’ obsession at this point, with conversations across social media refusing to die down. Word of mouth has become the film’s biggest weapon, pushing it onto the list of the year’s biggest success stories and giving its box-office journey another shot in the arm.

Obsession records another jump during its third weekend in India

Released on May 29, Obsession has now collected nearly ₹65 crore in India within 17 days, with word of mouth doing the heavy lifting from day one. Just as it did during its second weekend, the film kept the ball rolling in its third.

With 2,979 shows across India, the film earned ₹3.30 crore on Friday, June 12. Collections climbed to ₹5.85 crore on Saturday, June 13, before ending the weekend with ₹5.60 crore on Sunday, June 14.

With these numbers, Obsession has climbed to the second spot among Hollywood horror films at the Indian box office. The top position, however, continues to belong to The Conjuring: Last Rites, which finished its run with ₹83.40 crore in 2025.

The film’s run has not stopped at India’s borders. Despite going into production with a budget of only $750,000, Obsession has reportedly crossed the $230 million mark worldwide. Adding another feather to its cap, the film has even raced past the latest Star Wars release at the domestic U.S. box office.

According to industry tracker Box Office Mojo, Obsession has grossed $234,501,640, which translates to nearly ₹2,240 crore, during the 26 days since its U.S. release on May 15.

The film has also become the highest-grossing production ever for its studio in its home market, generating nearly $161 million in profit.

What do the reviews say? Is the movie really worth watching, or is it just overhyped?

If psychological horror is anyone’s cup of tea and they enjoy watching stories unfold on the big screen, Obsession deserves a place on their watchlist, for sure.

According to audience reviews, the film’s biggest triumph is in its filmmaking. Viewers have praised Curry Barker’s storytelling through visuals, pointing to the use of symmetry, frame-within-a-frame compositions, and camera placement that stays glued to the protagonist instead of constantly switching between characters.

That decision keeps viewers in the same boat as the lead character, allowing fear to build instead of revealing every card at once. As a result, suspense refuses to let go.

The sound department has also won applause. Even conversations carry a sense of unease because of the film’s audio design, while horror sequences gather momentum through sound long before anything appears on screen. Viewers believe the film understands that fear often grows inside the mind before reaching the eyes, making anticipation the driving force behind every scare.

The performances have also struck a chord, particularly that of Inde Navarrette, who plays Nikki. Without giving away spoilers, one sequence in which the character remains motionless in a dark corner before moving in an unnaturally smooth yet jerky manner had left viewers shaken.

Instead of depending on loud tricks, the director places faith in darkness, movement, and atmosphere, allowing the scene to linger long after it ends. The narrative also refuses to walk down the usual path. What begins as the story of a socially awkward young man struggling to confess his feelings slowly transforms into psychological horror with supernatural elements.

Along the way, the film explores obsession, possession, and the price people pay when wishes refuse to stay within limits. Viewers have noted that the screenplay constantly keeps them guessing about who controls the supernatural force and where the central relationship is headed.

The ending has also found favor with a large section of the audience. Many viewers believe it provides enough answers to complete the journey while leaving room for interpretation instead of spelling everything out.

Taken as a whole, Obsession earns a recommendation for anyone who enjoys slow-burn psychological horror, atmosphere, inventive cinematography, performances that leave a mark, and stories that linger long after the credits roll.
