The singer recently revealed that he has been suffering from a pinched nerve, a condition that has required MRI and CT scans, medication, painkillers, and physiotherapy. While he admitted that the treatment has been painful and the medicines have even affected his throat, he remains determined to keep his promise to fans and perform on stage.

In a video shared on Instagram, Sonu Nigam opened up about the health setback he has been battling. Revealing the extent of his condition, the singer said, “My nerves are pinched. I have been taking MRI and CT scans for a week. I have been taking a lot of medicines.”

His recovery has kept him under medical care, with MRI scans, CT scans, medication, and physiotherapy becoming part and parcel of his routine over the past week.

Speaking about the treatment, the veteran singer admitted that physiotherapy has taken a toll on him. “Physiotherapy was very painful. I am taking painkillers now. Due to that, my throat is also a little heavy,” he said, explaining that painkillers have now become part of his treatment.

The medication prescribed to relax his muscles has also affected his throat. And for a vocalist/singer who is preparing to return to the stage for a live performance, that’s not good news for sure.

Even so, Sonu Nigam has stated that he has no intention of throwing in the towel. Despite the health setback and the ongoing treatment, the singer said he remains committed to performing and has no plans to cancel his concert in Mumbai. On the contrary, he has been looking forward to taking the stage after a long gap and wants to honor the promise he made to his fans.

What is this pinched nerve condition, and what can be its aftereffects?

A pinched nerve, medically known as nerve compression, occurs when surrounding tissues such as bones, muscles, cartilage, or tendons place excessive pressure on a nerve. The pressure interferes with the nerve’s ability to transmit signals between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to symptoms that can range from mild discomfort to significant physical limitations.

The condition commonly causes persistent pain, burning sensations, tingling, numbness, weakness, or the familiar “pins and needles” feeling. Depending on which nerve is compressed, these symptoms may be felt in the neck, shoulders, arms, lower back, or legs. In many cases, the pain also radiates beyond the original site of compression, making even simple movements uncomfortable.

While painkillers can temporarily ease the discomfort, they do not eliminate the underlying problem. Physiotherapy is considered one of the most effective long-term treatments because it helps relieve pressure on the affected nerve, strengthens the muscles supporting the spine and joints, improves flexibility, and restores normal movement. The therapy itself can be painful, as Sonu Nigam shared, but it plays a critical role in preventing the condition from worsening.

According to medical experts at the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic, the long-term effects of a pinched nerve depend largely on how quickly it is treated. If the compression lasts only a short time, the nerve often recovers completely. However, when pressure continues for weeks or months, the nerve begins to lose its blood supply, damaging the protective myelin sheath that allows nerve signals to travel efficiently.

And if the compression remains untreated for more than six weeks, the damage can become permanent. Patients may experience lasting numbness, chronic burning pain, or scar tissue within the nerve that continues to interfere with its normal function even after the pressure has been relieved.

The condition can also affect muscle function. Since nerves carry signals from the brain that instruct muscles to move, prolonged compression prevents those signals from reaching their destination. Over time, the affected muscles weaken, shrink, and lose strength, a process known as muscle atrophy.

As the damage progresses, patients may develop difficulties with coordination and movement. A weakened grip can make it harder to hold everyday objects, while nerve compression in the leg may lead to “foot drop,” where the front part of the foot cannot be lifted properly, causing it to drag while walking.

Balance, reflexes, and coordination may also deteriorate as communication between the brain and the affected limb becomes increasingly disrupted. In some cases, the nervous system becomes hypersensitive, allowing what started as a temporary injury to develop into chronic pain that persists long after the original compression has been treated.
