Representing India A in the tri-series clash against Afghanistan A in Dambulla, the youngster produced a dazzling 44-run knock that showcased more than just raw power, which has become synonymous with his name.
The left-hander’s latest innings not only gave India A a flying start but also caught the attention of some of Indian cricket’s most respected voices. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and ex-batter and prolific commentator Sanjay Manjrekar were among those left impressed, both highlighting an aspect of Suryavanshi’s game that often gets overlooked amid the six-hitting headlines.

Reacting to the teenager’s innings on social media, Ashwin emphasized that the knock was built on timing and strokeplay rather than brute force. The veteran spinner singled out Suryavanshi’s cover drives as one of the standout features of the innings.
“Out! But 44(21) absolutely entertaining innings, punctuated with some well-timed cover drives. We have seen his power, but today was anything but brute force. He is some player this kid,” Ashwin wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Manjrekar echoed similar sentiments while pointing to the conditions in Sri Lanka, which offered a different challenge compared to the batting-friendly surfaces seen during the IPL. According to the former Indian batter, Suryavanshi’s ability to adapt in a 50-over game under different conditions is a strong indication that he can thrive beyond the shortest format.
“India A is in SL, pitch not as flat as in the IPL & it’s not T20 cricket. So watching Vaibhav Suryavanshi in different batting conditions. And I am excited! He is not just your T20 slogger. He can be a one-day phenomenon too! Special talent!” Manjrekar posted.
The common theme in both assessments was clear: Suryavanshi’s game extends well beyond power-hitting. His shot selection, timing, and ability to find gaps have convinced many that he possesses the tools to succeed across formats.

Coming into the match, Suryavanshi was looking for a stronger outing after managing 14 runs in India A’s opening fixture against Sri Lanka A. Although he showed flashes of aggression in that innings with three boundaries, he was unable to convert the start into a substantial score.
Against Afghanistan A, however, the teenager looked far more assured from the outset. Opening the innings, he raced to 44 runs off just 22 deliveries, striking nine boundaries and maintaining a strike rate of 200!
What made the innings particularly impressive was the variety on display. Rather than relying solely on aerial shots, the left-hand batter repeatedly pierced the field with crisp drives and well-timed strokes along the ground. Several of his boundaries came through the offside, where he effortlessly found gaps despite Afghanistan’s attempts to pack the field.
His entertaining stay at the crease eventually came to an end when he attempted an upper-cut against a short delivery outside off stump, edging behind to the wicketkeeper. While the dismissal once again highlighted a line of attack opposition bowlers have begun targeting, the innings nevertheless offered another glimpse into why Suryavanshi is regarded as one of Indian cricket’s brightest young prospects.
